Saint-Laurent d’Aigouze, in the Camargue heartlands

The village enjoys a privileged position at only 7km from the medieval city of Aigues Mortes and 15km from the fine sandy beaches of Grau-du-Roi. It sits between 2 major cities; Nimes and Montpellier.

The central square, bustling with life, has always been at the heart of the village. The cafés, restaurants, shops, arena, and church are all found on this circular meeting place. The village arena (bullring) has a unique feature, its bullpen is next to the church sacristy as if to demonstrate the strength of faith in the god Taurus held in these Camargue heartlands, « la fe di biou ».

Saint-Laurent includes several remarkable historic sites:

• The Carbonnière Tower is a unique observation point, listed as Grand site de France Camargue Gardoise for its environmental riches and quality of its biodiversity.
• The Peccais Fort, at 10km from the village, is a military building from the 16th century which served to control the neighbouring saltworks and canals used to transport salt. Today it is in ruins.

The wine industry was at its peak during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and today we can still enjoy the renowned vin des sables.  Some wine growers have turned naturally towards green-tourism. Gites and Bed and Breakfasts have flourished in the northern area known as Les Sables and in the Mas (small farmhouses) surrounding the village.

The village is a seat for the Course Camarguaise and everyday during its famous festival in the week following August 15th the village is full of life.
